Structure Fire New Wickham

May 8th 2021

On May 8th at 0437 hrs. the Penfield Fire Company received a call for a reported deck on fire on New Wickham Drive.

First arriving Chief officer observed heavy fire visible across the back of a row of townhouses consisting of (3) two story units and (2) single story units. At this time fire was also observed along the south side of the row of garages located directly behind the townhouses. Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputies were working on evacuating the residents of the involved townhouses and relocated them to the neighborhood community center.  Our sincere thanks to the Deputies who responded that morning and assisted in evacuating these residents just minutes before their homes were engulfed in flames.

Assisting on scene with fire suppression was Fairport FD and East Rochester FD. A second alarm was declared which brought the assistance of Brighton FD, Webster FD, West Webster FD and Egypt FD to the scene with one Engine Company each for additional manpower. Additional fill in companies were called from Pittsford and Bushnell’s Basin FD to cover the Penfield District while units were tied up.

Along with the 5 town houses involved there were a total of (7) seven vehicles either damaged or destroyed.  An adjacent row of garages suffered some exposure damage as a result of the heat. Units were able to keep the fire from spreading any further than the initial row of structures that were involved.   There were no injuries to residents or first responders.

Monroe County Fire Investigation Unit is conducting the investigation into the cause of this fire.

Our sincere thanks to ALL of the responding agencies that assisted at the scene.

Chief Bob Ockenden
